Abstract

Abstract Extended casing method and apparatus for completing an underwater well whereby complete and continuous pressure control is maintained at the surface drilling platform. A conductor casing is installed in the floor of a body of water with a casing head and riser attached near the floor. Other casing is installed and supported at the water floor by hanger heads and having other risers extending upwardly therefrom. Pressure control equipment is installed at the upper end of one of the risers. An innermost casing having a tubing hanger-head attached is lowered through the pressure control equipment and installed. An orientation sleeve is aligned with the tubing hanger-head to properly orient the tubing hanger. The tubing hanger and tubing, is then passed through the pressure control equipment and the innermost riser, to which the pressure control equipment is attached and is lowered to engage the orientation sleeve for proper alignment with the innermost hanger-head and remotely latched thereto. All seals are then pressure tested. The tubing is plugged, the riser and control equipment removed and a Christmas tree adapter connected to the tubing hanger-head. A Christmas tree assembly is then attached to the adapter in fluidtight flow communication with the tubing string.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 313 words
A string of pipe installed in substantially vertical position with a portion of said pipe string buried in the sea floor and a portion of it suspended in the water above said sea floor, comprising male and female coupling elements rigidly affixed to adjacent ends of upper and lower joints of said pipe string, with the male element telescopically received within the female element, a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart no-lead threads on the inner circumference of said female element and on the outer circumference of said male element, the threads on each being in alignment with the spaces between the threads on the other element, said threads being engaged with each other to prevent said pipe joints from moving axially apart the application of a tension force thereon, an annular shoulder on one of said elements in engagement with the other element preventing said pipe joints from moving axially toward each other, a fixed stop on one of said elements in engagement with the other element positioned to prevent relative rotation of said elements in one direction, and a movable latch on one of said elements in engagement with the other element positioned to prevent relative rotation of said elements in the other direction, and adapted to be moved to allow disengagement of said elements by relative rotation of said elements in said other direction without relative axial movement, followed by relative axial movement of said pipe joints away from each other in the absence of relative rotation, whereby said coupling elements may be engaged with each other and latched to maintain such engagement above the surface of the water, provide support means for supporting said lower pipe joint without disengagement while said pipe string is being lowered through the sea water, and provide means through which a driving force may be exerted to drive the lower pipe joint into the sea floor.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 313 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A string of pipe as defined by claim 1 wherein said threads are square, so that neither axial tension loads or axial compression loads exert any substantial radial load on either of said coupling elements.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
A string of pipe as defined by claim 1 and including telescoped unthreaded areas of cylindrical configuration on each of said male and female coupling elements, and seal means carried by one of said coupling elements in its said unthreaded area forming a fluid tight seal between said coupling elements whether loaded axially in either tension or compression.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
A string of pipe as defined by claim 1 wherein said groups of threads on the female member have substantially the same circumferential extent as the groups of threads on the male member.
