Abstract
Abstract Improved supported thallium(III) reagents are provided which significantly improve reaction rates and product selectivity of oxythallation reactions. The present reagents have a thallium(III) salt of an acid on the surface and within montmorillonite clay minerals.

The supported thallium reagent of claim 1 obtained by contacting an acidic montmorillonite clay having a surface area greater than 200 m 2 /gram with thallium(III) trinitrate trihydrate in a mixture of methanol and trimethyl orthoformate and removing solvent under reduced pressure until a free-flowing powder is obtained.
