Abstract
Abstract In panels for use particularly in the aeronautics industry comprising a metal support foil to which is adhered a fiber-reinforced metal matrix layer, the fibers being of high mechanical strength and modulus, the invention provides the improvement of interposing a thin layer of a bonding metal or alloy between the support foil and the fiber-reinforced metal matrix layer.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
101 words
A process for the production of a panel, which comprises the steps of: (i) depositing a thin layer of a bonding metal or alloy on a metal support sheet, the thickness of the bonding layer being between 0.05 and 10 microns, (ii) positioning a layer of spaced apart reinforcing fibres on the bonding metal or alloy layer, and (iii) spraying a metal by means of an arc plasma torch on to and through the reinforcing fibres to form a metal matrix reinforced with the fibres, and to melt the bonding metal, thereby bonding the reinforced metal matrix to the support sheet.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the deposition of said bonding metal or alloy layer is effected by pad electrolysis.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein said support sheet is degreased and surface-stripped before effecting the deposition of said bonding metal or alloy.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
9 words
The panel prepared by the process of claim 1.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
42 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the bonding metal or alloy is selected from the group consisting of copper, zinc, gold, silver, tin, indium, iron, brass, gold-indium alloys and alloys based on at least one of lead, tin, antimony and bismuth.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the fibre reinforcement consists of boron fibres coated with an anti-diffusion layer of boron carbide.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
22 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein both surfaces of the support sheet are provided with a bonding metal or alloy coating.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the bonding metal is copper and the thickness of the bonding layer is 0.05-5 microns.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the support sheet is formed of a light metal or alloy based on aluminum or titanium.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
31 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the metal powder being sprayed onto the reinforcing fibers in step (iii) has a melting point above the melting point of the support sheet.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
21 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the support sheet is an aluminum alloy of thickness between 25 and 38 microns.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process according to claim 9 wherein said alloy based on aluminum contains at least one of magnesium, silicon, iron, copper and titanium.
