Abstract

Abstract Thermoforming, utilized for making articles from sheets of thermoplastic ins, does not readily yield articles having desired strength properties. Using both thermoplastic and thermosetting resins in the process results in articles embodying fabrication stresses akin to those in prestressed concrete.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 116 words
A method for forming a prestressed plastic article by thermoforming, the process wherein a sheet of a thermoplastic resin is forced over a mold, said method including heating a thermoplastic sheet and a thermosetting resin-impregnated sheet of fiber-reinforced weft under conditions such that the thermoplastic layer would normally follow the mold, superimposing the soft thermoplastic sheet on the thermosetting resin layer, forcing the thermoplastic layer and thereby the thermosetting layer throughout the mold thus putting the thermosetting layer under tension, cooling the thermoplastic layer during the curing of the thermosetting layer thus also putting the thermoplastic layer under tension, and curing the thermosetting resin while both layers are under tension to form the prestressed plastic article.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
The process of claim 1 wherein a two layer laminate is formed, the thermoplastic layer being an acrylic copolymer, the thermosetting layer being glass fiber cloth impregnated with a liquid epoxide resin and sufficient amine crosslinking agent to cure the epoxide resin.
