Abstract
Abstract Water-soluble polyesters formed by the condensation of polyoxyalkylene glycol with the addition product of a dimer fatty acid and maleic anhydride are found to be particularly useful as lubricants and as viscosity adjusting additives in aqueous hydraulic systems.

A water-soluble polyester which comprises; the condensation product of (a) a polyoxyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of from about 400 to about 1000; and (b) the addition product of (1) a dimer fatty acid; and (2) from about 0.4 to about 0.8 equivalents of maleic anhydride for each equivalent of the dimer fatty acid wherein about 2.1 to about 3.2 equivalents of the glycol are used for each equivalent of the addition product.

A water-soluble polyester which comprises; the condensation product of (a) a polyoxyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of from about 400 to about 1000; and (b) the addition product of (1) a dimer fatty acid; and (2) from about 0.4 to about 0.8 equivalents of maleic anhydride for each equivalent of the dimer fatty acid wherein about 2.1 to about 3.2 equivalents of the glycol are used for each equivalent of the addition product.
