Abstract

Abstract A synthetic organic resin is coated with a continuous layer of contiguous, tangential, individual microspheres having a uniform diameter preferably between 100 Angstroms and 2000 Angstroms. The microspheres are an addition polymerized polymer of an unsaturated aldehyde containing 4 to 20 carbon atoms and are covalently bonded to the substrate by means of high energy radiation grafting. The microspheres contain reactive aldehyde groups and can form conjugates with proteins such as enzymes or other aldehyde reactive materials.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 92 words
A coated article comprising: a synthetic organic resin substrate, said resin being capable of developing covalent bonds during high energy radiation; a continuous layer of contiguous, tangential, individual microspheres having an uniform diameter between 100 Angstroms and 2000 Angstroms bound to the surface of the substrate by covalent bonds formed between the resin and the microspheres by means of high energy radiation grafting of the microspheres to the surface of the resin substrate, said microspheres consisting essentially of the addition polymerized polymer of an unsaturated aldehyde containing 4 to 20 carbon atoms.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 92 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A coated article according to claim 1 in which the resin is selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, acrylic polymers or dextran.
