Abstract

Abstract A file substrate of paper stock such as a file backer or file folder having a reinforced edge portion is disclosed. Such file substrate has at least one straight edge with a tear resistant plastic film secured either side of the substrate and about the straight edge. This film reinforces the substrate straight edge without significantly increasing the thickness thereof. A colored adhesive may be used for securing a clear reinforcing film to the folder. This provides a color band down a side of the folder to distinguish a group of files in a file system. Method and apparatus are disclosed for applying the reinforcing film to file folder blanks.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 131 words
A method for producing a reinforced edge of a file substrate of paper stock comprising withdrawing paper folder web stock from a supply roll and advancing the web stock, applying and bonding a continuous tear resistant plastic film to one surface of the web stock adjacent one straight edge thereof as it is advanced, folding the web stock and film in the length of the film as the web stock is advanced to produce two opposed paper stock portions with film to the exterior thereof, applying an adhesive to said opposed paper stock portions which secures the same, cutting within the width of the film to form a desired shape of the reinforced edge of the file substrate and cutting said web stock in predetermined lengths to form said file substrate.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said opposed paper stock portions are secured by adhesive applied to said web stock before folding of the substrate and film, and wherein the plastic film is transparent and a coloured adhesive visible through the film bonds the film to the web stock.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said film is of high tensile strength and is adhesively bonded essentially in a non-tensioned state to such paper stock.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 210 words
A method of producing file folder blanks made of paper stock having a reinforced edge portion comprising withdrawing a paper web stock of a predetermined width from a supply roll and advancing the withdrawn paper web stock, adhesively securing a continuous high tensile strength film to one surface of the paper web stock adjacent one edge thereof as the same is advanced, applying an adhesive on the surface of the paper web stock opposite the high tensile strength film as the web stock is advanced, folding the combined paper web stock and film upon itself in the length of the film as the web stock is advanced to form an adhesively secured reinforced edge portion having a thickness about double the thickness of the paper stock and bound on the two exterior surfaces and about the edge with the high tensile strength film, creasing the paper stock to form at least one fold line separating front and back panels of a file folder, and cutting one of said panels to remove a substantial portion of the reinforced edge of the panel along the edge thereof and thereby form a label extending portion defined by the reinforced edge of the other panel and cutting the file folder from the paper web.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 including cutting said label extending portion adjacent the crease to provide a smooth transition between the reinforced edge of the back panel and the reinforced edge of the front panel.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 36 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 including automatically maintaining alignment of the edge of the paper stock web to maintain the film within the periphery of the paper stock web and adjacent one edge thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 including applying a water based pressure sensitive adhesive emulsion to one surface of the film and substantially drying the applied adhesive emulsion prior to securing the film to the paper stock.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein drying of the adhesive is accomplished by circulating hot air over the film to which the adhesive has been applied.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 171 words
A method for making a folder having a folder having a reinforced side portion for use in a lateral file system comprising withdrawing paper folder web from a supply roll, moving such web with parallel side edges and upper and lower surfaces when moved horizontally, applying to a web side edge by use of an adhesive a width of reinforcing tear resistant plastic film, wrapping said film around the side edge and adhering it to upper and lower surface portions along said edge while said web is moving, cutting within the width of said film along the side edge to form the desired folder side shape for use in a lateral file system and cutting folder side shape for use in a lateral file system and cutting said web to a predetermined length to provide a folder blank for folding about its mid-section to from said folder having front and back panels where said reinforcing film extends along the length of the side edge of said folder front and back panels.
