Claim 1
Independent Claim
190 words
A method of testing a two-way radio communication channel between a base station and a distant radio telephone and noteworthy for not needing anyone to be present at the distant radio telephone, comprising the steps of: (a) generating a test signal in the audio frequency range; (b) transmitting the test signal from the base station to the distant radio telephone via the communication channel being tested; (c) receiving at the distant radio telephone the test signal transmitted from the base station; (d) detecting the test signal received by the radio telephone; (e) applying the detected test signal to the earpiece of the radio telephone, whereby the earpiece produces a sound that is sensed by the mouthpiece and converted to an electrical signal; (f) transmitting the electrical signal produced by the mouthpiece from the radio telephone to the base station via the communication channel being tested; (g) receiving at the base station the electrical signal transmitted from the radio telephone; (h) detecting the electrical signal received at the base station; and, (i) deciding whether the detected electrical signal is similar to the test signal that was transmitted by the base station.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
18 words
The method of claim 1 wherein step (a) further comprises generating an audio tone of a particular frequency.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
39 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the subsequent step of: (j) indicating that the communication channel has been found to be operating satisfactorily if the detected electrical signal is similar to the test signal generated in step (a).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
40 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the subsequent step of: (j) indicating that the communication channel has been found to be operating unsatisfactorily if the detected electrical signal is not similar to the test signal generated in step (a).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the preliminary step of determining that the distant radio telephone is not in use.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
207 words
Apparatus for testing a two-way radio communication channel between a base station and a distant radio telephone, and noteworthy for not needing anyone to be present at the distant radio telephone, said apparatus comprising in combination: a base station transmitter; first means at the base station for generating a test signal in the audio frequency range and for applying the test signal as an input to said base station transmitter, whereby the test signal is transmitted; a radio telephone located remotely from the base station and including a receiver for receiving the test signal transmitted by said base station transmitter, an earpiece connected to said receiver and producing a sound in response to the received test signal, a mouthpiece producing an electrical signal in response to the sound produced by said earpiece, and a transmitter connected to said mouthpiece for transmitting to the base station the electrical signal produced by said mouthpiece; a base station receiver for receiving the electrical signal transmitted by the transmitter of said radio telephone; and, second means located at the base station, connected to said base station receiver, and responsive to the signal received by said base station receiver for comparing that signal with the test signal generated by said first means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
207 words

Claim 9
Dependent Claim
46 words
The apparatus of claim 6 further comprising in combination: third means at the base station connected to said second means, for producing an ALARM signal when the signal received by the base station receiver is not similar to the test signal generated by said first means.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
45 words
The apparatus of claim 6 further comprising in combination: third means at the base station connected to said second means, for producing a SATISFACTORY signal when the signal received by the base station receiver is similar to the test signal generated by said first means.
