Text display apparatus and a method of displaying text

Claim 2

A text display apparatus comprising: display means having a fixed display resolution, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data from said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read out memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different form said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generator means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means.

Claim 3

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said display means comprises a liquid crystal panel.

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said display means comprises a plasma display panel.

Claim 5

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first character size specifying means comprises address decoder means, and head address specifying register means in which standard character size is written.

Claim 6

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second character size specifying means comprises address decoder means and head address specifying means in which a character size different from the standard character size is written.

Claim 7

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said read out means comprises control means, interface means for operatively coupling to the text storing medium, and memory means storing the application program for displaying text with the standard character size on the display means.

Claim 8

The text display apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said operative coupling comprises magnetic coupling.

Claim 9

The text display apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said operative coupling comprises photo coupling.

Claim 10

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said read out means and determination means comprise CPU, memory, and interface means.

Claim 11

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said display address generating means comprises synchronizing signal generating means, display timing signal generating means for generating display timing signal in response to the synchronizing signal, and means for generating address data for display indicating the line number and column number, in accordance with the display timing signal and the address data indicating the display position of the character.

Claim 12

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said memory means comprises a refresh memory storing character code data.

Claim 13

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said character generating means comprises a ROM storing character font data of a plurality of different sizes.

Claim 14

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said video signal generating means parallel/serial converts character font data.

Claim 15

The text display apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said video signal generating means and said display line address generating means are coupled, and said video signal generating means parallel/serial converts the character font data for generating the corresponding video signal.

Claim 16

The text display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second character size specifying means comprises protecting means for releasing writing of character size in response to an address signal, and inhibiting the writing of the character size after the character size is written.

Claim 17

The test display apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said protecting means comprises address decoder means, data decoder means, and sequential means for passing character size data when the output of address decoder means and the output of data decoder means are applied.

Claim 18

The text display apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said video signal generating means and said display line address generating means are coupled, and said video signal generating means is responsive to a display timing signal for generating a video signal.

Claim 19

In a text display apparatus comprising, display means having a fixed resolution, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a character size different from said standard character size, display address generating means for generating display address data to display text, refresh memory means, character generating means storing character font data of a plurality of different sizes, cursor generating means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with character size data from the first character size specifying means and the character size data from the second character size specifying means, and video signal generating means for generating a video signal in accordance with character font data from character generating means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, a method of displaying text comprises the steps of: reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determining whether or not the read out character code data can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output is affirmative, and selecting the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, providing the read out character code data and the address data of the character position into the refresh memory, providing address data for display into the refresh memory means, and generating character font data corresponding to the selected character size, and correcting the cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when said second character size specifying means is selected.

Claim 20

In a text display apparatus comprising, display means having a fixed resolution, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a character size different from said standard character size, display address generating means for generating display address data to display text, refresh memory means, character generating means storing character font data of a plurality of different sizes, cursor generating means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with character size data from the first character size specifying means and the character size data from the second character size specifying means, and video signal generating means for generating a video signal in accordance with character font data from character generating means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, a method of displaying text comprises the steps of: reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determining whether or not the read out character code data can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output is affirmative, and selecting the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, providing the read out character code data and the address data of the character position into the refresh memory, providing address data for display into the refresh memory means, and generating character font data corresponding to the selected character size, and correcting the cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when said second character size specifying means is selected.

Claim 21

A text display apparatus comprising: display means having a fixed display resolution, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data from said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generator means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, wherein said cursor generating means comprises dot number difference detecting means for detecting the dot number difference of the character sizes specified by said first and second character size specifying means, registers having the column number and the line number of the cursor written in accordance with the cursor data and address data from said read out means, correcting means for correcting said written column number and line number in accordance with said detected dot number difference, address comparing means for detecting the coincidence of said corrected column number with the display address data, line number comparing means for detecting the coincidence of said corrected line number with the display line number, and logical means for providing display position data of the cursor only when the address comparing means and the line number comparing means detect coincidence.

Claim 22

A text display apparatus comprising: display means having a fixed display resolution, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data from said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generator means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, wherein said cursor generating means comprises dot number difference detecting means for detecting the dot number difference of the character sizes specified by said first and second character size specifying means, registers having the column number and the line number of the cursor written in accordance with the cursor data and address data from said read out means, correcting means for correcting said written column number and line number in accordance with said detected dot number difference, address comparing means for detecting the coincidence of said corrected column number with the display address data, line number comparing means for detecting the coincidence of said corrected line number with the display line number, and logical means for providing display position data of the cursor only when the address comparing means and the line number comparing means detect coincidence.

Claim 23

A text display apparatus comprising: display means having a fixed display resolution, an application program means for providing standard character size information which corresponds to the display resolution of said display means, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data from said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generator means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, wherein character size can be changed from said standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means to said second character size without modifying said application program.

Claim 24

A text display apparatus comprising: display means having a fixed display resolution, an application program means for providing standard character size information which corresponds to the display resolution of said display means, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, selecting means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data from said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard character size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generator means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, wherein character size can be changed from said standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means to said second character size without modifying said application program.

Claim 25

In a text display apparatus comprising: display means having the display resolution fixed, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, electing means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data form said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generating means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, said second character size specifying means including a protecting means for releasing writing of character size and inhibiting writing of character size after the character size is written, a method of operating said text display apparatus comprising the steps of: fetching one page of text and making a determination whether to display one of either said standard character size and said second character size; and when determination is made to display said standard character size, performing the steps of calling an application program, and operating said application program; and when determination is made to display said second character size, performing the steps of providing character size data to said protecting means for releasing said protecting means, writing character size data specifying said second character size into said second character size specifying means, after the step of writing, inhibiting writing into said second character size specifying circuit, comparing character sizes of said first and second character size specifying circuits to determine said dot number difference, generating said cursor positioning data in accordance with said dot number deference, calling said application program, and operating said application program.

Claim 26

In a text display apparatus comprising: display means having the display resolution fixed, first character size specifying means for specifying the standard character size corresponding to the display resolution of said display means, second character size specifying means for specifying a second character size, different from the said standard character size, read out means for reading out character code data of one page of text and address data of the character position from a text storing medium, determination means for determining whether the read out character code data of one page of text can be displayed on the entire area of a screen of said display means with said standard character size, electing means for selecting the first character size specifying means when the determination output of said determination means is affirmative, and the second character size specifying means when the determination output is negative, display line address generating means for generating display line address data to display text, memory means coupled to said display line address generating means for storing said read out character code data and providing the character code data in response to said display line address data, character generating means responsive to the character code data form said memory means for generating character font data of the character size selected by said selecting means, said character generating circuit comprising a read only memory having character font data of said standard size stored at a first plurality of addresses and character font data of said second character size, different from said standard character size, stored at a second different plurality of addresses, cursor generating means for generating cursor positioning data in accordance with the dot number difference of the character size data of the first character size specifying means and the character size data of the second character size specifying means, when the second character size specifying means is selected, and video signal means for generating and displaying a video signal corresponding to the character font data generated by said character generating means, said second character size specifying means including a protecting means for releasing writing of character size and inhibiting writing of character size after the character size is written, a method of operating said text display apparatus comprising the steps of: fetching one page of text and making a determination whether to display one of either said standard character size and said second character size; and when determination is made to display said standard character size, performing the steps of calling an application program, and operating said application program; and when determination is made to display said second character size, performing the steps of providing character size data to said protecting means for releasing said protecting means, writing character size data specifying said second character size into said second character size specifying means, after the step of writing, inhibiting writing into said second character size specifying circuit, comparing character sizes of said first and second character size specifying circuits to determine said dot number difference, generating said cursor positioning data in accordance with said dot number deference, calling said application program, and operating said application program.
