Abstract

Abstract A combination of a metal coiled tubing and a signal transmitting passageway for transmitting and/or receiving signals to well tools positioned in the coiled tubing. The signal transmitting passageway is positioned in the wall of the coiled tubing and may transmit and receive hydraulic, electrical or light signals and the signals may be used for transmitting power signals for actuating well tools, control signals for controlling well tools, and/or data signals for transmitting or receiving information.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 76 words
A combination of a coiled tubing and a signal transmitting passageway for transmitting and/or receiving signals to well tools positioned in the coiled tubing comprising, a flexible coiled tubing having an outer diameter, an inner diameter, and a bore therethrough and adapted to support at least one signal actuated well tool therein, and said coiled tubing having at least one signal transmitting passageway positioned in the coiled tubing between the inner diameter and the outer diameter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 76 words
A combination of a coiled tubing and a signal transmitting passageway for transmitting and/or receiving signals to well tools positioned in the coiled tubing comprising, a flexible coiled tubing having an outer diameter, an inner diameter, and a bore therethrough and adapted to support at least one signal actuated well tool therein, and said coiled tubing having at least one signal transmitting passageway positioned in the coiled tubing between the inner diameter and the outer diameter.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least two separate signal transmitting passageways are positioned between the inner diameter and the outer diameter.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 1 including, a protective rib extending transversely relative to the outer diameter between adjacent passageways for protection of the passageways.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal transmitting passageway is formed to conduct hydraulic fluid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words

Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal transmitting passageway includes a fiber optic cable.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal transmitting passageway is positioned approximately midway between the inner diameter and the outer diameter.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cross-sectional area of the passageway is oval-shaped with a major axis and a minor axis with the minor axis extending radially.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the oval shape is substantially elliptical.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the length of the major axis is substantially no greater than twice the length of the minor axis.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal transmitting passageway is positioned against the outer diameter of the coiled tubing.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 14 words
