Room temp. hardening thermoplastic textile material - comprising textile and glass fibres with monofilaments or tapes of crystalline polyester
Abstract
Abstract Material comprises (a) textile fibres and glass fibres and (b) monofilaments or tapes made of a high mol.wt. crystalline polyester which exhibits plastic and adhesive properties at a temp. of ca. 55 deg.C. The crystalline polyester pref. has a mol. wt. of at least 5000 and is pref. extruded from a mass contg. a silica-based viscosity modifier. The material is pref. coated on at least one side with a film of crystalline polyester with a mol. wt. of at least 5000 contg. a silica-based viscosity modifier, esp. in a film 50-500 microns thick. Used in the prodn. of decorative, covering and protective materials, vessels and containers, tubes, boats, surfboards, cable protectors, etc., and esp. as splint materials to replace plaster and plaster casts for medical applications such as orthopedics, or as selvage materials. The crystalline polymer can easily be formed into the desired monofilaments, tapes, etc., by extrusion and the final material can be shaped (e.g. by immersion in hot water) at relatively low temps. of 55 deg.C., so that the bare hands can be used.
