Abstract

Abstract Refuse annihilator comprises a reaction chamber (28) for thermal treatment, and conveyor means (22, 28) for introducing refuse and discharging residues. The chamber includes a device (50) for producing a plasma arc (150), and may include a secondary portion which receives the gases and heat which are given off and which contains devices (128) for separating the gases from entrained particles and cooling them, allowing only clean, cool air to pass into the atmosphere. The plasma arc may be produced by opposed electrodes (50) of which the operation and temperature in the plasma zone are controlled by IR pyrometers for high temps.
