Abstract

Abstract A rotating magnetic disk storage assembly (10) using sector servo information on the disks (9), is initialized with servo information by first using the dedicated product transducer heads (14) and accessing mechanism (13), to write on the innermost and outermost data tracks. The data tracks written by each transducer head are read using the heads (16) of a precision servowriter mechanism positioned at the expected data track positions. Errors between expected and actual positions are determined and in turn each servo writer head is positioned to duplicate the path of the product head written innermost and outermost tracks. By offsetting the precision servowriter head by a half track pitch and writing the servo information to form equally spaced tracks, the disk is initialized with full track pitch servo information which is positioned and aligned with the position and alignment of the dedicated product head assembly. This is repeated for each disk and servo writer head.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 136 words
1 A method of initializing sector servo information on the disks (9) of a magnetic disk storage assembly (10) having transducer heads (14) positionable by an actuator (13), comprising using the transducer heads to write first and second non-adjacent tracks on the surfaces of the disks, measuring the radial position and circumferential timing of the impulses written relative to the position and timing of corresponding transducer heads (16) of a precision servo track writer device, determining the radial position and circumferential timing for each pattern of servo track to be written, and successively writing the servo tracks on the disks by radially positioning the corresponding servo writer head and circumferentially adjusting the write start timing, whereby the placement of the servo information is adjusted to the position and path of travel of the associated transducer head.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 136 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
2 A method according to claim 1, in which the step of writing first and second non-adjacent tracks on the disks, comprises the writing of the innermost and outermost tracks of the data tracks associated with the transducer heads.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 57 words
3 A method according to claim 1 or 2, including a further initial step of applying a clock track to one disk surface using a clock head (22, 23, 24) which writes evenly spaced transitions along such clock track except for an index position and thereafter reads such clock track to provide circumferential position and timing information.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 73 words
4 A method according to claim 1, 2 or 3, in which the step of determining the radial position and circumferential timing comprises identification of the non-adjacent track radial positions, determination of the track pitch within the data band and positioning the servo writer transducer head at half track displacements from data track positions, whereby the servo track patterns are written with the servo pattern track interface identifying the data track portion centrelines.
