Abstract

Abstract A software analyzer monitors the performance of a particular device (CPU) in a data processing system in which the CPU and other devices are connected to a common bus to which access is granted on a priority basis. The analyzer is positioned on the bus in priority position adjacent to the particular device whose bus use is to be detected, and includes bus utilization detection logic which determines when the common bus has been awarded to the particular device even though there may have been other devices simultaneously requesting access to the common bus. The analyzer is thus connected in the same manner as other devices are connected to the common bus, instead of requiring internal connections to the CPU.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
In a data processin system comprising a plurality of devices sharing a common resource wherein conflicts between competing requests to utilize the common resource by different devices are resolved on a priority basis, monitoring means for detecting activity of a particular device, characterized in that said means are connected to the common resource and include priority detection means for detecting the priority level of the particular device, and grant detection means for detecting when utilization of the common resource has been granted to a device, the outputs of the priority detection means and the grant detection means being combined.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 99 words
In a data processin system comprising a plurality of devices sharing a common resource wherein conflicts between competing requests to utilize the common resource by different devices are resolved on a priority basis, monitoring means for detecting activity of a particular device, characterized in that said means are connected to the common resource and include priority detection means for detecting the priority level of the particular device, and grant detection means for detecting when utilization of the common resource has been granted to a device, the outputs of the priority detection means and the grant detection means being combined.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
Monitoring means according to Claim 1, characterized in that the common resource is a bus.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
Monitoring means according to Claim 2, characterized in that the physical sequencing of the devices along the bus determines their respective priorities, and the monitoring means is connected to the bus between the particular device and all other devices.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 40 words
Monitoring means according to any previous claim, characterized in that the priority detection means and grant detection means each include a flip-flop which is reset by the detection of a response from a destination device of the plurality of devices.
