Abstract

Abstract A low-pressure voice prosthesis device includes a cylindrical housing (12) having a proximal end (14) with strap elements (18) extending outwardly from the proximal end (14), a distal end (16) and a port (26) operatively cooperating with a tracheostoma (21) in the neck of a patient. The cylindrical housing (12) further includes a one-way valve structure (24) comprised of an annular sealing rim (30) in the housing (12) adjacent the distal end (16) and a valve membrane (28) hingedly mounted within the housing (12) to cooperate with the annular sealing rim (30) to provide the one-way valve structure (24). An annular collar (34) extends outwardly from the housing (12) and is positioned to abut against the esophagus tissue when the device (10) has been positioned within a fistula (20) connecting the esophagus (22) to the tracheostoma (21). The valve membrane (28) is movable from a closed to an open position when air passes through the port (26) from the tracheostoma (21) to the esophagus (22) to produce alaryngeal speech and sounds in the patient.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 222 words
A voice prosthesis device (10) for placement in a fistula (20) to channeHair from a tracheostoma (21) to the esophagus (22), said device being characterised in that it comprises a cylindrical housing (12) having a proximal end (14), at least one strap (18) extending outwardly from the proximal end, a distal end (16), a port (26) therein operatively cooperating with the tracheostoma (21), a one-way valve (24) including an annular sealing rim (30) positioned within said housing (12) adjacent said distal end (16) and a valve membrane (28) hingedly mounted (at 29) on said housing (12) on the side thereof adjacent said distal end (16) of said housing (12) to cooperate with said annular sealing rim (30), an annular collar (34) extending outwardly from said housing (12), said annular collar (34) being adapted to abut against the esophagus tissue when the device (10) has been positioned in the fistula (20), to retain and hold the device (10) properly in position, such that upon covering the tracheostoma (21) opening, said valve membrane (28) is moved by the channeled air from the closed position against said annular sealing rim (30) to an open position wherein the channeled air enters the esophagus (22) to produce alaryngeal speech by the patient and an extension (25) integral with the housing and extending beyond the annular collar (34).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 222 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 68 words
A device according to claim 1, characterised in that said annular sealing rim (30) of said valve means (24) further includes a projection (32) extending inwardly toward the centre of said housing (12), said projection (32) cooperating with said valve membrane (28) to maintain the same in alignment against said annular sealing rim (30) when said valve membrane (28) is moved from said open to said closed position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
A device according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that said annular sealing rim (30) is positioned on said cylindrical housing (12) between said port (26) and said valve means (24).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A device according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterised in that said valve membrane (28) is hingedly mounted on the interior of the housing (12).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 49 words
A device according to any preceding claim, characterised in that about 35 centimeters of water pressure is sufficient to move said valve membrane (28) from said closed to said open position and thereby permit channeled air to pass into the esophagus (22) to produce alaryngeal speech by the patient.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 20 words
A device according to any preceding claim, characterised in that said cylindrical housing (12) is comprised of medical grade silicone.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 70 words
A device according to any preceding claim, characterised in that said annular sealing rim (30) is located in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical housing (12) adjacent to said distal end (16) where said extension (25) is integral therewith, with said extension (25) providing a shield to prevent esophageal matter from impeding the movement of said valve membrane (28) between said closed and said open position.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 18 words
A device according to any preceding claim, characterised in that the end of the extension (25) is bevelled.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 140 words
A device according to any preceding claim, characterised in that it further comprises a placement tool (36) for positioning the device (10) into a fistula (20) connecting the tracheostoma (21) with the esophagus (22) of the patient, said placement tool including an elongate housing member having a handle portion (37) on one end thereof and a placement portion (38) on the opposite end, said placement portion (38) having a shoulder (39) adapted to engage the annular sealing rim (30), when the tool (36) is inserted within the cylindrical housing (12) to position the voice prosthesis device (10) within the patient, with said placement portion (38) further including a projecting portion (40) extending beyond said shoulder portion (39) which cooperates with the valve membrane (28) to maintain the valve membrane (28) in engagement with respect to the annular sealing rim (30).
