Abstract

Abstract The system includes a plurality of image processing devices (10,12,14,16,18) having different resolutions and a central image file or data base (20). In a sending device, an original image to be sent is decomposed to a base image (CBI) and at least one error compensation data (ECD). The original image is first converted to a lower resolution image (LRI) by a pel conversion technique. The lower resolution image is then used to predict the original image. The predicted image is compared with the original image and a pred i tion error therebetween is coded to obtain a first error compensation data. The lower resolution image becomes a new original image and this process is repeated until a base image having the lowest resolution in the system is obtained. Such image information comprising the base image and the error compensation data is sent to the image data base. A receiving device receives image information having a resolution corresponding to that of the receiving device, reconstructs a base image, predicts a one step higher resolution image (HRI) therefrom, adds the last error compensation data to the higher resolution image, and repeats such prediction and addition until the original image is reconstructed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 179 words
An image processing system, characterized in that a) a plurality of image processing devices (10, 12, 14, 16, 18) having different resolutions are included, b) an original image to be sent from a selected image processing device is constituted by a base image (CBI) corresponding to the lowest resolution, and one or more error compensation data (ECD) corresponding to resolutions changing stepwise from the resolution of said base image to that of said original image, c) said base image is generated by reducing stepwise the resolution of said original image, d) said error compensation data is generated by predicting from either a lower resolution image (LRI) whose resolution is lower than that of said original image or said base image a higher resolution image (HRI) whose resolution is one step higher than it, and by encoding error between the predicted image and an actual higher resolution image, and e) when said original image is to be sent to another selected image processing device, image data only up to the one having a resolution of said other device are sent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 179 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
An image processing system recited in Claim 1, wherein arithmetic coding is used to encode said error compensation data.
