Quinoline antibacterial compounds

Claim 1

A compound having the formula: wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a carboxy protecting group; R is selected from the group consisting of an aromatic heterocyclic ring containing 5 to 7 atoms therein, with the hetero atom being at least one of S, 0 and N and the remaining atoms in the ring being carbon atoms, and a phenyl group having the formula: wherein R 2 is one or more groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, nitro, carboxyl, methylenedioxy, cyano, C l to C 6 alkyl and substituted derivatives thereof, a group having the formula: -Y-R 3 wherein -Y- is -0- or -S- and R 3 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl, and an amine group having the formula: wherein R 4 and R 5 are independently hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl; and, Z is a pyridyl or is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic heterocyclic ring containing 4 to 7 atoms and substituted derivatives thereof, an amino group of the formula: wherein R 6 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 10 alkyl and substituted derivatives thereof and R 7 is selected from the group consisting of C 1 to C 10 alkyl and substituted derivatives thereof, an amine group, a mono-(C 1 to C 6 ) alkylamino group and a di-(C 1 to C 6 ) alkylamino group; W and X are independently selected from hydrogen or halogen, with the proviso that when Z is not pyridyl, W is a halogen; X and Z can be taken together to form a methylenedioxy bridge, with the proviso that W is then hydrogen; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
