Abstract

Abstract A sustained release drug delivery device, for use in the rumen of a ruminant animal, of the type having a hydrolyzable biodegradable polymeric core in which a medicament beneficial when administered to the digestive tract of the ruminant animal is dissolved or suspended, which core is contained in a tube which is compatible with the rumen and which has at least one open end, which comprises a relatively thick layer of elastic sealent filling the length of the annulus between the core and the tube and forming an adhesive bond to both the core and the tube, said sealent being substantially impermeable to water, compatible with both the tube and the core, and compatible with and unaffected by the rumen is provided by the present invention.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
A sustained release drug delivery device, for use in the rumen of a ruminant animal, of the type having a hydrolyzable biodegradable polymeric core in which a medicament beneficial when administered to the digestive tract of the ruminant animal is dissolved or suspended, which core is contained in a tube which is compatible with the rumen and which has at least one open end, which comprises a relatively thick layer of elastic sealant filling the length of the annulus between the core and the tube and forming an adhesive bond to both the core and the tube, said sealant being substantially impermeable to water, compatible with both the tube and the core, and compatible with and unaffected by the rumen.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as claimed in claim 1 in which the polymer of the polymeric core comprises from about 60% to about 95% of lactic acid:and from about 40% to about 5% of glycolic acid and has a number average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 6000.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the tube is made of material having a density from about 6 to about 10 g./cc.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 in which the tube is made of stainless steel or low-carbon steel coated with a film compatible with the sealant and rumen.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 54 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as claimed in claim 4 in which the length of the tube is from about 25 to about 85 millimeters, the outside diameter of the tube is from about 10 to 40 millimeters or the wall of the tube is from about 1 to about 4 millimeters thick.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device as claimed in claim 5 in which the length of the polymeric core is substantially the same as the length of the tube.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 31 words
A device as claimed in any one of claims 4 to 6 in which the molecular weight of the polymer comprising the polymeric core is from about 2000 to about 4,500.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as claimed in claim 7 in which the polymeric core comprises from about 1% to about 50% medicament.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 41 words
A device as claimed in claim 8 in which the medicament is a ruminant feed efficiency improver, an anthelmintic, an antibiotic, a coccidiostat, an ectoparasiticide, a feed-through insecticide, an estrus suppressor, a trace element, a nutritional agent, or a combination thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
A device as claimed in claim 9 in which the medicament is monensin, narasin, salinomycin, lasalocid, fenbendazole, melengestrol, ivermectin, or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt or ester thereof where applicable, or a combination thereof.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 34 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 in which the elastic sealant is a hot melt sealant or a sealant that sets or cures chemically.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 26 words
A device as claimed in claim 11 in which the sealant comprises ethyl-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene resin, polyamide resin, thermoplastic rubber, a silicone, or a polysulfide.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 18 words
A device as claimed in claim 12 in which the sealant comprises ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or polyethylene resin.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 27 words
A sustained release device as claimed in claim 13 in which an open end of the tube is covered with a molded elastomeric hemispherical perforated end cap.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 34 words
A sustained release device as claimed in claim 13 in which an open end of the tube is covered with a perforated end cap which is an extension of the material of the tube.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 33 words
A device as claimed in claim 13 in which an end of the tube is covered with a perforated end cap which is an integral part of an outer shell enclosing the tube.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 27 words
A sustained release drug delivery device as defined in any one of claims 1 to 16 for use in the administration of medicaments to a ruminant animal.
