Abstract

Abstract An injection set for delivering a fluid to a subcutaneous injection location in a patient which has a soft cannula (14) projecting from a bottom surface (16) of a housing or holding pad (12). An insertion needle (22) is initially inserted through one or more self-sealing septum layers (52) located in the top of the holding pad (12), and extends through a fluid chamber (50) contained in the holding pad (12) and through a lumen (58) of soft cannula (14), with the sharpened tip (24) of the insertion needle (22) extending beyond the end of the soft cannula (14) when the insertion needle (22) is fully inserted. The insertion needle (22), which allows priming of the injection set, may be removed following installation of the injection set, and fluid may be supplied to the injection set for delivery to the patient. The fluid is supplied to the chamber (50) via an inlet in a direction parallel to the bottom surface (16) of the holding pad (12).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 118 words
A subcutaneous injection set (10) comprising a housing (12) having a substantially flat base (16) for location on the skin (38) of a patient, a hollow needle (14) protruding from the flat base (16) and means (18,50) for connecting a source of fluid to the needle (14), characterised in that the needle (14) is a soft or flexible cannula having a lumen (58) which is in fluid communication with a chamber (50) within the housing, the injection set also including cannula insertion means (22) for inserting the protruding portion of the cannula (14) into a subcutaneous layer (42) of the patient as the flat base (16) of the housing is placed against the skin (38) of the patient.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 118 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 1 characterised in that the cannula insertion means comprises an insertion needle (22) tightly inserted into the lumen of the cannula (14) the tip (24) of the insertion needle projecting beyond the end of the cannula (14) when the insertion needle (22) is fully inserted.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 2 characterised in that the upper side of the housing (12) includes a self-sealing septum (52) made from a pierceable resilient resealable substance, which closes the top of the chamber, and through which the insertion needle (22) may be removably inserted.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 76 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 3 characterised by compression means (54) for subjecting the self-sealing septum affixed to the upper side of the housing to constant compressive forces, whereby any hole made in the septum (52) by the insertion needle (22) is tightly closed by compressive forces, whereby any hole made in the septum (52) by the insertion needle (22) is tightly closed by the compressive forces once the insertion needle (22) is removed.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 4 characterised in that the compressive forces include both radial compressive forces and shearing compressive forces acting on the septum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 63 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 4 or Claim 5 characterised in that the compression means includes a cap (54) which is affixed to the upper side of the housing (12) over the septum (52) in a way which exerts a compressive force on the septum (52), the cap having a small hole through which the insertion needle (22) may be inserted.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
An injection set as claimed in any preceding claim characterised by a fluid inlet to the chamber (50) through a side of the housing adjacent to and between the base (16) and upper side of the housing (12).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 55 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 7 characterised in that the fluid inlet includes a flexible tube (18) in fluid communication with the chamber (50) within the housing (12), the flexible tube (18) extending from the side wall of the housing (12) at an angle which is substantially parallel to the flat base (16).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 32 words
An injection set as claimed in Claim 7 characterised in that the fluid inlet is closed by a second self-sealing septum (392) through which an infusion needle (390) may be removably inserted.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 63 words
An injection set as claimed in any preceding Claim characterised by means for detachably securing the flat base (16) of the housing (12) to the skin (38) of the patient, comprising an adhesive layer (32) placed on the flat base (16) of the housing (12) to the skin (38) of the patient, comprising an adhesive layer (32) placed on the flat base (16).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 126 words
An injection set as claimed in any preceding claim characterised by means for priming the injection set when the chamber (50) is connected to a source of fluid prior to insertion of the insertion needle (22) and the soft cannula (14) into the skin (38) of a patient, the priming means comprising a passage (62,64) between the tip (24) of the insertion needle (22) and a section of the insertion needle (22) within the chamber, the passage (62,64) being in fluid communication with the chamber, whereby all air or other gases within the fluid chamber may escape through the passage 62,64) when the tip (24) of the insertion needle (22) is held so as to point upwards as fluid is introduced under pressure into the chamber.
