Abstract

Abstract A heating system for the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle with an air breathing, fuel burning engine includes a plurality of heat exchangers (14,22) with each heat exchanger receiving heat from at least one of a plurality independent heat sources associated with the engine, and means (26) or circulating air serially through each of the heat exchangers and into the passenger compartment. The indenpendent heat sources include coolant circulating through the engine, exhaust gas flowing from the engine, compressed air flowing from a turbocharger associated with the engine to the air intake of the engine, and lubricating oil circulating through the engine.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 83 words
A heating system for the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle with an air breathing, fuel burning engine, comprising; a plurality of heat exchangers, (14,22) each of said heat exchangers (14,22) being arranged to receive heat from at least one of a plurality of independent heat sources associated with said engine, one of said heat sources being a coolant which circulates through said engine, and means (25) for circulating air serially through each of said heat exchangers and then into said passenger compartment.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 83 words
A heating system for the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle with an air breathing, fuel burning engine, comprising; a plurality of heat exchangers, (14,22) each of said heat exchangers (14,22) being arranged to receive heat from at least one of a plurality of independent heat sources associated with said engine, one of said heat sources being a coolant which circulates through said engine, and means (25) for circulating air serially through each of said heat exchangers and then into said passenger compartment.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said heat sources further comprise a lubricant oil which circulates through said engine, an exhaust gas from said engine, compressed air which flows from a turbo-charger associated with the air intake of the engine and electrical power generated by the engine.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 76 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said plurality of heat exchangers include a first heat exchanger for receiving heat from coolant which circulates through said engine and a second heat exchanger for receiving heat from exhaust gas flowing from said engine wherein said second heat exchanger is supplied with heat by a third heat exchanger and heat transfer system operatively associated with and receiving heat only from exhaust gas flowing from said engine.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 71 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said third heat exchanger and heat transfer system comprises a thrid heat exchanger for receiving and transferring heat from said exhaust gas to a heat transfer fluid, a pump and associated conduits for circulating said heat transfer fluid to said second heat exchanger, and a temperature regulator for governing the flow of heat from said exhaust gas to said heat transfer fluid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 42 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 4, wherein said temperature regulator comprises valve means, responsive to the temperature of said heat transfer fluid circulating to said second heat exchanger, for controlling a flow of exhaust gas to said third heat exchanger.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 101 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said plurality of heat exchanger include a first heat exchanger for receiving heat from coolant which circulates through said engine, a second heat exchanger which is supplied with heat by a third heat exchanger and heat transfer system operatively associated with and receiving heat from a heat source of said engine other than said coolant, said heat exchanger and heat transfer system comprising a third heat exchanger for receiving and transferring heat from said heat source to a heat transfer fluid circulated from said third heat exchanger to said second heat exchanger.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 49 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 6, wherein said second heat exchanger is supplied with heat from exhaust gas flowing from said engine compressed air flowing from a turbocharger associated with said engine to the air intake of said engine or lubricating oil which circulates through said engine.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
A heating system as claimed in Claim 6 and 7, wherein said third heat exchanger comprises a coil wound about the outer periphery of a by-pass line through which a heated fluid flows.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
A heating system as claimed in any one of Claims 3 to 8, including a case for containing said first and second heat exchanges.
