Abstract

Abstract This invention is directed to a membrane-type filter device. Vents (12) located opposite the hydrophilic membrane (4) remove entrapped gases in the inlet chamber (2) of the housing (1). There are preferably two such vents (12) on either end of the inlet chamber (2), of which the corners are preferably non-rectangluar, and which remove entrapped gases from the fluid without regard to filter device or orientation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 81 words
A filter device comprising: a housing having two spaced ends; a hydrophilic membrane extending between the ends dividing the housing into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber; an inlet in the inlet chamber to direct fluid into the inlet chamber; venting means positioned sufficiently close to each end of the inlet chamber to contact gas at the respective said end of the inlet chamber, but without obstructing contact between the hydrophilic membrane and said respective end of the inlet chamber.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 81 words
A filter device comprising: a housing having two spaced ends; a hydrophilic membrane extending between the ends dividing the housing into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber; an inlet in the inlet chamber to direct fluid into the inlet chamber; venting means positioned sufficiently close to each end of the inlet chamber to contact gas at the respective said end of the inlet chamber, but without obstructing contact between the hydrophilic membrane and said respective end of the inlet chamber.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 115 words
A filter device for an aqueous fluid, comprising: a housing having two spaced ends; a hydrophilic membrane extending between the ends dividing the housing into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber; an inlet in the inlet chamber to direct an aqueous fluid into the inlet chamber; a separate vent proximate each said end of the inlet chamber to vent gas from the inlet chamber; a hydrophobic membrane in each vent capable of transmitting gas in preference to water through the vent; each vent positioned sufficiently close to its respective said end of the inlet chamber to vent gas from said respective end but without obstructing contact between the hydrophilic membrane and said respective end.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 113 words
An intravenous filter device comprising: a flat, substantially transparent housing and a hydrophilic membrane dividing the housing into two chambers, each chamber having an outer wall; an inlet to the housing for delivering fluid to the first chamber; an outlet to the housing for delivering fluid from the second chamber; and at least two vents in the wall of the inlet chamber opposite the surface of the hydrophilic membrane; the vents comprising a hydrophobic membrane attached to the inner wall of the first chamber; wherein the vents are compositely large enough to contact air bubbles throughout in the first chamber but small enough to provide visibility of the hydrophilic membrane through the housing.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
A device of claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the ratio of surface area of the hydrophobic membrane to the surface area of the hydrophilic membrane is from about 1:20 to 1:4.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 23 words
A device of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein each vent is positioned in a plane spaced from the hydrophilic membrane.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 18 words
A device of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the hydrophilic membrane extends around each vent.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A filter device of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the first or inlet chamber is substantially rectangular, octagonal or triangular.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 30 words
A device of any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the vents are located from about 0.03 inches to about 0.10 inches from respective end edges of the housing.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 34 words
A device of any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the second or outlet chamber has a plurality of ridges for supporting the hydrophilic membrane against a pressure differential across the hydrophilic membrane.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 56 words
A device of any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the inlet comprises a ridged distributor attached to the first or inlet chamber for delivering fluid to the first or inlet chamber and/or the outlet comprises a ridged distributor attached to the second or outlet chamber for delivering fluid from the second or outlet chamber.
