Abstract

Abstract A controller (12) that includes a number of switches is associated with a first appliance (10) that has a number of operating states. In at least one of the operating states of the first appliance, the controller responds to certain switch actuations by causing it to perform a task, but when it is in another operating state, the same switch actuations have no meaning insofar as the first appliance is concerned, so the controller responds by transmitting data signals to a second appliance (not shown) via a power line (18). In this manner, a single controller can be used to control a number of appliances when a particular switch actuation has no meaning in the context of controlling the associated appliance. For example, the keypad (12) of a telephone set (10) is used to select a particular television station. Control signals are sent by the telephone to the television (not shown) by spread spectrum data transmission over an AC power line (18). The data transmission format used is in accordance with the CEBUS® standard promulgated by the Electronic Industries Association.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 136 words
Electrical apparatus 10 having a plurality of operating states and control switches 12, associated therewith, for causing tasks to be performed in response to actuations of the control switches, certain switch actuations causing the electrical apparatus to perform a predetermined task when it is in a first operating state 50 but not when it is in a second operating state 40, the electrical apparatus being effectively connected to a transmission media for transmitting and receiving information, the electrical apparatus CHARACTERIZED BY: means 15 for generating control signals related to the certain switch actuations when the electrical apparatus is in the second operating state; and means 20 for broadcasting the control signals on the transmission media; whereby another electrical apparatus, connected to the transmission media, can share use of the control switches of the associated electrical apparatus.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 27 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrical apparatus comprises a telephone set 10 and the control switches include button keys 12 on the telephone set.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 56 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means 15 for generating control signals includes a microprocessor that executes instructions stored in a memory in response to the certain switch actuations, the control signals including an information packet 101-108 that requests another electrical apparatus to perform a task that is contextually similar to the predetermined task.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 3 wherein the means 20 for broadcasting the control signals includes modulating means 22 for converting baseband signals into signals suitable for transmission over the transmission media.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 4 wherein the transmission media comprises an AC power line.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 5 wherein the modulating means 22 generates spread spectrum signals.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
The electrical apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrical apparatus comprises a light 804 having a center-rest control switch 900.
