Abstract

Abstract The present invention is an implantable device that is capable of delivering a therapeutic agent to a tissue or organ over a long period of time. The implantable device is especially suited for treating tissues and organs that are comprised of smooth muscle. The implantable device can deliver either a single therapeutic agent or a plurality of therapeutic agents to the tissue or organ at zero order kinetics.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 91 words
An implant device for the long term delivery of a therapeutic agent to a tissue or organ, comprising: a container for implantation within the tissue or organ; a therapeutic agent contained within the container; and means associated with at least one of the container and the therapeutic agent for controlling the rate of release of the therapeutic agent from the container into the tissue or organ such that the therapeutic agent is released at a rate of at least approximately 0.1 ag/day over a period of at least approximately three months.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 91 words
An implant device for the long term delivery of a therapeutic agent to a tissue or organ, comprising: a container for implantation within the tissue or organ; a therapeutic agent contained within the container; and means associated with at least one of the container and the therapeutic agent for controlling the rate of release of the therapeutic agent from the container into the tissue or organ such that the therapeutic agent is released at a rate of at least approximately 0.1 ag/day over a period of at least approximately three months.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the means associated with at least one of the container and the therapeutic agent for controlling the rate of release of the therapeutic agent comprises a portion of the container being permeable to the therapeutic agent.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
The implant device of Claim 2, wherein the rate of release of the therapeutic agent is controlled by controlling the permeability of the permeable portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The implant device of Claim 2, wherein the rate of release of the therapeutic agent is controlled by controlling the dimensions of the permeable portion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 42 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the means associated with at least one of the container and the therapeutic agent for controlling the rate of release of the therapeutic agent comprises a biodegradable matrix within which the therapeutic agent is immobilized.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The implant device of Claim 5, wherein the rate of release is controlled by controlling the rate of biodegradation of the biodegradable matrix.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the container is comprised of a material which is impermeable to macromolecules.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of antimuscarinic agents, anticholinergic agents, antispasmodic agents, calcium antagonist agents, potassium channel openers, musculotropic relaxants, polysynaptic inhibitors, beta-adrenergic stimulators and antitumor agents.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of propantheline bromide, imipramine, hyoscyamine sulfate, oxybutynin chloride, carmustine, dicyclomine and terodiline.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
The implant device of Claim 5, wherein the biodegradable matrix is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polyanhydrides, polyglycolide, polypeptides, hyaluronic acid, collagen, chondroitin sulfate, carboxylic acids, phospholipids, polysaccharides, nucleic acids, phenylalanine, tyrosine, isoleucine, polynucleotides, polyethylene glycol, and beeswax.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 12 words
The implant device of Claim 1, wherein the container is a cylinder.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 27 words
The implant device of Claim 7, wherein the material which is impermeable to macromolecules is selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, gold, titanium, and plastic.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
The implant device of Claim 12, wherein the plastic is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene and parylene.
