Abstract

Abstract Disclosed is a method and system for providing communications services between multiple processes running in multiple computer systems. A mechanism of creating logical process hierarchies within a distributed environment is provided. Extensions beyond the logical process hierarchy are similarly provided. The communication mechanism is implemented as a library of functions available for use by individual processes. An arbitrary definition of context may be used, such that processes need not be related within the operating system process space by name or any other attribute. Rather, a single system semantic can be used to access processes, whether such processes reside on a local or remote computer. A mechanism is provided to allow processes to register as part of a distributed context. Registration may be accomplished explicitly by any child process to name it's parent in the hierarchy, or automatically by the parent process when spawning children. This mechanism allows the additional flexibility that destination nodes in the distributed environment may be selected at run time without requiring knowledge on the part of the executing process. This allows the ability to cause processes to be distributed based on machine type, facilities available on a specific node or load balancing considerations. This registration mechanism is expandable to allow general purpose server implementations in a distributed environment, thus providing to the user system transparent facilities for control in a distributed environment.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 45 words
A method for invoking multiple processes in a multicomputer data processing system, comprising the steps of: creating a single system semantic by said multicomputer data processing system; and using said single system semantic to invoke said processes in both a local and remote data processor.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 59 words
A method for managing multiple processes in a multicomputer data processing system, comprising the steps of: combining a machine name of a computer with a unique process ID for a process executing on said computer to create a multicomputer unique process ID; and using said multicomputer unique process ID to control multiple processes in said multicomputer data processing system.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said multicomputer unique process ID is a part of a directory name used to maintain information for said process.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 43 words
A method for providing transparent interprocess communication across a distributed data processing system, comprising the steps of: initiating, at a local processor, an execution of a remote process residing on a remote processor; and registering said remote process to provide access information dynamically.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method as claimed in Claim 4 wherein a local parent process spawns a remote child process.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as claimed in Claim 4 wherein said remote process can be dynamically accessed by a nonrelated local process using said access information.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 41 words
A system for invoking multiple processes in a multicomputer data processing system, comprising: a local data processor; a remote data processor; and means for using a single system semantic to invoke said processes in both a local and remote data processor.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 60 words
A system for managing multiple processes in a multicomputer data processing system, comprising: means for combining a machine name of a computer with a unique process ID for a process executing on said computer to create a multicomputer unique process ID; and means for using said multicomputer unique process ID to control multiple processes in said multicomputer data processing system.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A system as claimed in Claim 8 wherein said multicomputer unique process ID is a part of a directory name used to maintain information for said process.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 44 words
A system for providing transparent interprocess communication across a distributed data processing system, comprising: means for initiating, at a local processor, an execution of a remote process residing on a remote processor; and means for registering said remote process to provide access information dynamically.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
A system as claimed in Claim 10 wherein a local parent process spawns a remote child process.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
A system as claimed in Claim 10 wherein said remote process can be dynamically accessed by a nonrelated local process using said access information.
