Surface treating method for barium sulfate
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To obtain barium sulfate having superior characteristics as pigment by adding a sol. metal salt and a precipitant to a barium sulfate slurry in the presence of a dialkyldimethylammonium salt to deposit fine insol. inorg. particles on the surfaces of the barium sulfate particles. CONSTITUTION: Barium sulfate formed by the reaction of barium sulfide and sulfuric acid is suspended in water to prepare a 15W30wt% slurry. To this slurry are added a sol. metal salt such as zinc sulfate or titanium sulfate in an amt. of 0.005W0.6wt% as oxide to the amt. of barium sulfate and a dialkyldimethylammonium salt such as distearyl dime thylammonium in an amt. of 0.002W0.3wt% to the amt. of barium sulfate, and a precipitant such as caustic alkali or ammonia. Thus, fine insol. inorg. particles of hydroxide or the like derived from the sol. metal salt are deposited on the surfaces of the barium sulfate particles to obtain barium sulfate having superior dispersibility in org. media, superior luster, weather resistance and storage stability.
