Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce electric power unit as far as possible by specifying the thickness of the layer having COOH groups, the exchange capacity of the COOH groups and further the caustic alkali concentration in the cathode chamber solution respectively in the cation exchange membrane composed of two or more layers of the layer mainly having SO3H groups and the layer mainly having COOH groups. CONSTITUTION:In electrolyzing NaCl or KCl through the use of the cation exchange membrane, the thickness of the layer having COOH groups out of the exchange membrane consisting of two or more layers of the layer mainly having SO3H groups and the layer mainly having COOH groups is made less than 1/2 the total thickness of the membrane and yet it is so arranged that the exchange capactiy of the COOH groups becomes 0.5-1.5 milli equevalent/g dry resin (H-type). Further, electrolysis is performed while the caustic alkali concentration in the cathode chamber solution is being maintained at 6-12N, preferably 7-11N, particularly 8-10N (solid line). When the condensing operation of the NaOH solution is added (broken line), the minimum of energy consumption exists at the point where 9-10N is obtained.
