Abstract

Abstract An electrical connector specifically applicable to establishing connections between a flat surface such as a printed circuit board, and contact elements extending at right angles to the plane of the board. The connector includes two halves. One half includes a plurality of rodlike contact elements mounted in parallel, side-by-side relationship, in a housing of insulating material. The ends of the rods extend from opposite sides of the housing. The mating half of the connector includes a plurality of forklike contacts mounted in a housing of insulating material in position for the forks to straddle the extending ends of the rods. Successive rows of the rods are formed with increasing lengths to mate with corresponding forks arranged in successive layers. Separation and mating of the connector halves is achieved by relative movement in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axes of the rods.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 259 words
A separable electrical connector, comprising: a first base of dielectric material; a first plurality of rodlike contact elements having tips extending axially from said first base in parallel spaced-apart side-by-side relationship defining a plane perpendicular to said base; a second plurality of rodlike contact elements arranged in parallel spaced-apart side-by-side relationship defining a plane parallel to the plane of said first rodlike contact elements, and having tips extending axially from said base beyond the tips of said first rodlike elements; a second base interfitting with said first base upon relative movement in a direction perpendicular to the planes of said first and second rodlike elements; a first plurality of resilient, slotted, forklike contact elements arranged in a first plane generally parallel to said first base and perpendicular to the planes of said rodlike elements, said forklike elements extending from said second base toward said first base in parallel spaced-apart side-byside relationship, each having a pair of resilient arms defining a central slot for engaging the tips of said first plurality of rodlike elements upon interfitting of said bases; and a second plurality of resilient, slotted, forklike contact elements arranged in a second plane parallel to and spaced from said first plane, each having a pair of resilient arms defining a slot extending beyond the arms of said first plurality of forklike elements for engaging the tips of said second plurality of rodlike elements upon interfitting of said bases; wherein said bases include interfitting means guiding relative movement therebetween in a direction perpendicular to the planes of said rodlike elements.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 90 words
A separable electrical connector in accordance with claim 1 wherein: one of said bases has a front surface for mating with the other of said bases and a rear surface for abutting an external conductor support such as a printed circuit board; and at least one of said plurality of contact elements on said base extends from the front surface thereof and rearwardly through said base and includes a tail portion extending from the rear surface thereof for engaging conductors on a printed circuit bOard mounted to said rear surface.
