Abstract

Abstract Toner image degradation due to excessive buildup of thick deposits of a solid stable hydrophobic metal salt of a fatty acid on the surface of electrostatographic imaging members during successive imaging operations with development material containing the metal salt is prevented by continuously or intermittently maintaining the thickness of the buildup below about 10 microns by vigorous rubbing contact with a wiping member.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 34 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said metal salt and said finely divided toner material are freely movable in relation to each other immediately prior to contact with said reusable imaging surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 20 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said metal salt is immovably attached to said finely divided toner material.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said particles include carrier particles having said finely divided toner particles electrostatically clinging thereto, said carrier particles having a size such that by their own weight they are movable away from said electrostatically clinging finely divided toner material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said metal salt is zinc stearate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said metal salt is cadmium stearate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said wiping member comprises at least one wiper blade.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
An imaging process according to claim 7 further including the step of periodically lifting said wiping member away from said reusable imaging surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said wiping member is fibrous.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said pressure is sufficient to maintain said thickness of said film below about 6 microns.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said pressure is sufficient to maintain said thickness of said film below about 3 microns.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein steps (a) through (d) are repeated at least once.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 62 words
An imaging process according to claim 1 wherein said developing material comprises from about 0.05 to about 4 percent, based on the weight of said toner material, of at least one solid, stable, substantially water-insoluble, hydrophobic metal salt of a fatty acid available at external surfaces of said particles, said metal salt having a melting point of at least about 57* C.
