Abstract

Abstract A thermoelectric generator is described with an efficiency of heat to electricity conversion higher than the maximum efficiency as defined by the theory applicable to a simple thermocouple. The generator represents an overall counterflow heat exchange containing thermocouples as its integral part. The energy conversion is maximized when certain structural relationships are fulfilled. The thermocouples are subdivided into segments which are oriented so that overall temperature drop in the heat exchanger and temperature drops in the segments are parallel. To allow for delivery of hot and cold fluids at the rates necessary for actual operation of the generator and simultaneously to minimize heat flow from the hot end to the cold end of the generator, thermoelectricity generating functions and heat exchanging functions are separated and stratified. Number of metallic heat exchangers are placed in places perpendicular to the overall heat drop in the generator to allow heat exchange between the heating and cooling fluids.
