Abstract

Abstract An electrical connector having a deformable tubular shell between a cable and fitting manufactured by a process of magnetically deforming the shell at one end to the underlying cable and at the other end to the underlying fitting to provide a superior EMI and shielding integrity as well as a good water tight seal without the need of potting the connection or providing special seal elements.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 202 words
The process of preparing an electrical cable for mating with a connector, said process comprising the steps of: supporting at least one electical conductor by an insulate; providing an outer, tubular electrical conductor over said insulate; splitting at least one end of the outer conductor; installing an insulate cover over the outer conductor up to the area of the split end thereof; folding back the split end of the outer conductor over the insulate cover; locating a ring over the folded back split end of the outer conductor; returning the split end back over the ring; locating a tubular casing over said insulate cover until a portion thereof is placed such that its inner walls are in close proximity to the folded back split end of the outer cover; and applying a high impulse of current to a coil about the aforementioned portion of the casing to produce a magnetic field of high intensity between the coil and the casing and eddy currents in the casing whereby an inward force is created to conform the casing to the sandwich of outer conductor, ring, outer conductor and insulate cover and integrate such elements as a sealed unit having good mechanical and electrical integrity.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 202 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 102 words
The process of claim 1 and further including the joining of the cable and connector by the steps of: joining the electrical conductor to a means within the connector; locating the connector within the open end of the casing; applying a high impulse of current to a coil about the open end of the casing to produce a magnetic field of high intensity between the coil and the casing and eddy currents in the casing whereby an inward force is created to conform the casing to the connector and join the same as a sealed unit having good mechanical and electrical integrity.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 41 words
The process of claim 2 and further characterized by the step of twisting said electrical conductor in its joining within the connector to provide strain relief for the electrical conductor within the casing in the sealed area between cable and connector.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 2 and further characterized by the combing of a braided form of the outer conductor to loop back over the insulate cover and return over the ring.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 123 words
A method of joining a shielded cable with at least one conductor to a connector comprising: covering the cable with an insulate up to a pre-determined distance of at least one end thereof; placing an aluminum ring over said cover adjacent its end; looping the shield of the cable to be under and over the ring; placing an end of an aluminum casing over the insulate and loop of shield and ring; magnetically forming the casing to the loop and insulate; mating the conductor to a connector plug; providing a strain relief in the electrical conductor extended from the cable; locating the connector body containing the plug within another end of the aluminum casing; and magnetically forming the casing to the connector body.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 5 and further comprising the step of serrating a portion of the connector to provide valleys within which the shell flows on magnetic forming.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 6 and further comprising separating an end of the shielded cable such that the shield provides separate elements for individual bonding to the shell.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 126 words
The method of forming a good mechanically sealed and electrically conductive integration of a rubber covered shielded cable and a connector comprising the steps of: stripping back a portion of the rubber; laying the exposed shielding back over the rubber; bridging the gap between the cable and connector with a metallic shell generally conformed to the diameter of the rubber covered shielded cable, the rubber covered shielded cable with shielding thereover and the connector; magnetically forming one end of the shell to the connector and another portion thereof to the shielding about the rubber covered shielded cable; and absorbing forming forces of the shell and shielding by the rubber cover of the shielded cable to prevent same from effecting the electrical characteristics of the shielded cable.
