Abstract A polymeric quaternary ammonium compound, or a mixture of polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds, having the formula Z[CH 2 CHOHCH 2 -N.sup.⊕ (CH 3 ) 2 ] n CH 2 CHOHCH 2 --Z + nX - , wherein Z is either X or the radical --N(CH 3 ) 2 ; where X is halogen of atomic weight greater than 34; and n is an integer of from 2 to 20.
