Abstract
Abstract A multistage catalytic reactor for purifying exhaust gas has a passage for communicating exhaust gas to first and second catalyst bed assemblies, and a valve for automatically maintaining flow of the gas solely through the first catalyst bed assembly in response to a first operating condition and for automatically passing the gas through the first and second catalyst bed assemblies in response to a second operating condition, shifting of said valve being free of external control.
