Abstract

Abstract This invention involves methods and apparatus relating to the assembly and structure of a dot matrix print head. The invention includes a single unit, coil assembly of a bobbin, coil, and clapper which can be removeably placed as a unit among fixed pole pieces and yoke members in the print head. The print head also includes a supporting arrangement for the coil assemblies which automatically aligns the clapper of each coil assembly with the impact end of one of the print wires during the assembly of the print head. Other disclosed features of the invention are novel designs for the wire guide members, a heat sink member, and mounting structure by which the print head is attached to the main guide and rail guide bearings of the printing mechanism. The invention also includes novel assembly aids and procedures which simplify and hasten the assembly of the print head including the use of assembly aids for inserting the print wires into the wire guide members and a grinding technique whereby all of the print wires can be easily and quickly ground to the proper length. With the novel print head design of this invention, the mounting plate, heat sink member, and coil assemblies can all be slideably assembled together and retained in place by snap-in, mating recess-detent arrangements between each bobbin and pole piece. In this manner, the print head can be easily and quickly assembled for operation and easily and quickly disassembled for repairs.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 202 words
In a dot matrix printer mechanism having a print head extending along a first axis, an elongated head shaft extending along a second axis spaced from a platen, and a main guide bearing movably mounted about said head shaft, the improvement comprising: means for removably clamping said print head to said main guide bearing in a fixed position relative thereto with said first and second axes substantially perpendicular, said clamp means including a first clamp portion fixed to said print head, a second clamp portion, and means for mounting said second clamp portion adjacent said first clamp portion for movement toward and away therefrom whereby said print head can be easily and quickly attached to said main guide bearing in a fixed position relative thereto by positioning said first and second clamp portions on opposing sides of said main guide bearing and moving said first and second clamp portions toward each other to tightly grip said main guide bearing therebetween and prevent relative motion between said print head and said main guide bearing and said print head can be easily and quickly removed from engagement with said main guide bearing by moving said first and second clamp portions away from each other.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 202 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 117 words
The improvement of claim 1 wherein said means for mounting said second clamp portion adjacent said first clamp portion for movement toward and away therefrom further includes means for moving said second clamp portion away from said first clamp portion a distance sufficient enough to permit said main guide bearing to pass between said first and second clamp portions in a direction substantially perpendicular to said second axis whereby said first and second clamp portions can be separated from each other by said mounting means to at least said distance and said print head thereafter can be freely moved selectively away from and toward said main guide bearing in said direction substantially perpendicular to said second axis.
