Abstract
Abstract An improved microbial insecticide composition, and methods for the production and utilization thereof, are disclosed. The disclosed composition comprises a microbial insect pathogen of viral, bacterial, or fungal origin which is susceptible to sunlight-induced inactivation embedded in a coacervate microbead which is comprised of a nucleic acid, typically RNA, and a proteinaceous material, whereby the microbead structure itself effectively shields the agent from sunlight-induced inactivation. The microbead is typically stabilized by chemical crosslinking.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
62 words
A method of embedding microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products in microbeads, comprising: (a) mixing a buffered aqueous solution containing microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products with an aqueous solution containing a nucleic acid; and (b) mixing the said mixture with an aqueous solution containing a proteinaceous material, thereby spontaneously forming microbeads having the microorganisms and chemical products embedded therein.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
62 words
A method of embedding microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products in microbeads, comprising: (a) mixing a buffered aqueous solution containing microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products with an aqueous solution containing a nucleic acid; and (b) mixing the said mixture with an aqueous solution containing a proteinaceous material, thereby spontaneously forming microbeads having the microorganisms and chemical products embedded therein.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
49 words
A method as in claim 1 wherein prior to the two mixing steps the microorganisms and chemical products are cleaned by washing and the surface charge of the microorganisms and chemical products is modified by the addition of a protein-modifying agent adapted to provide a more uniform surface charge.
Claim 4
Independent Claim
86 words
A method of embedding microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products in microbeads, comprising: (a) preparing a mixture comprising (i) nucleic acid particles, (ii) proteinaceous material particles, (iii) microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products, and (iv) an amount of water sufficient to wet substantially the entire mixture and give it a paste-like consistency; and (b) agitating the paste-like mixture in a manner adapted to break up the mixture into discrete microbeads, whereby the microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products are embedded in the microbeads.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Independent Claim
20 words
A method as in claims 1 or 3, wherein the microbeads are stabilized by treatment with a chemical crosslinking agent.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
15 words
A method as in claim 4, wherein the crosslinking agent comprises tannic acid or glutaraldehyde.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the agitation of the paste-like mixture takes place in a solution containing a chemical crosslinking agent.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
42 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the paste-like mixture is prepared by mixing the nucleic acid particles and the proteinaceous particles, separately mixing the water with the microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products, and then mixing these two mixtures together.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
39 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the paste-like mixture is prepared by first mixing the nucleic acid particles, the proteinaceous particles, and the water, and then mixing the microorganisms and their biologically active chemical products into this mixture.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
15 words
A method as in claims 1 or 3, wherein the microbeads are subsequently freeze dried.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
44 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein prior to being embedded in the microbeads, the surface charge of the microorganisms and chemical products is made strongly negative or strongly positive by the addition of a protein-modifying agent to an aqueous suspension of the microorganisms.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
12 words
The insecticide composition made by the process of claims 1 or 3.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
28 words
A method for controlling insect pests in insect infested areas which comprises applying an effective amount of the insecticide composition of claim 11 to said insect infested areas.
