A method of preparing a compound which comprises (I) contacting 8-hydroxyquinoline with an allylhalide in the presence of an anhydrous base and a solvent for a period of time sufficient to react essentially all of the allylhalide with the 8-hydroxyquinoline; (II) distilling the product from (I) to remove any solvent and unreacted reactants from the reaction mixture; (III) heating the residue product from (II) in an inert atmosphere until essentially all of the residue product is rearranged to form allyl containing, 8-hydroxyquinoline; (IV) treating the rearranged reaction product from (III) with a silylating agent selected from a group consisting of (R" 3 Si) 2 NH, R" 3 SiCl and R" 3 SiOR'" wherein R" is an alkyl group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms and R'" is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; (V) reacting the reaction product from (IV) with (R""O) 3 SiH, wherein R"" is an alkyl radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms in the presence of a hydrosilation catalyst, whereby a compound is formed of the formula ##STR27## wherein X is an alkoxy radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms; Q is ##STR28## y has a value of 0 or 1; R' is an alkyl radical containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms.

A method of preparing a compound which comprises (I) contacting 8-hydroxyquinoline with an allylhalide in the presence of an anhydrous base and a solvent for a period of time sufficient to react essentially all of the allylhalide with the 8-hydroxyquinoline; (II) distilling the product from (I) to remove any solvent and unreacted reactants from the reaction mixture; (III) heating the residue product from (II) in an inert atmosphere until essentially all of the residue product is rearranged to form allyl containing, 8-hydroxyquinoline; (IV) treating the rearranged reaction product from (III) with a silylating agent selected from a group consisting of (R" 3 Si) 2 NH, R" 3 SiCl and R" 3 SiOR'" wherein R" is an alkyl group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms and R'" is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; (V) reacting the reaction product from (IV) with (R""O) 3 SiH, wherein R"" is an alkyl radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms in the presence of a hydrosilation catalyst, whereby a compound is formed of the formula ##STR27## wherein X is an alkoxy radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms; Q is ##STR28## y has a value of 0 or 1; R' is an alkyl radical containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms.
