Abstract

Abstract A method of making a filter media for use in a filter employed to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified, such as a hydrocarbon fuel. The method includes the steps of providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified, applying starch-polyacrylonitrile graft polymer in dry, granular form to the mat, and fixing the co-polymer to the mat by spraying the mat with a volatile solvent containing a small amount of water.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified; applying starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer as a dry granular material to said mat; and fixing said copolymer to said mat.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified; applying starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer as a dry granular material to said mat; and fixing said copolymer to said mat.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
The filter media of claim 1 wherein the amount of copolymer applied to different portions of the mat is varied in a predetermined fashion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of applying is performed by directing said dry, granular copolymer at one side of the mat while applying a partial vacuum to the opposite side of the mat.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 2 including the step of substantially continuously advancing the mat from a station for said applying to a station for said fixing.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of fixing is performed by wetting the mat after the step of applying.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 78 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified; applying dry, granular starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer to said mat; and fixing said copolymer to said mat by spraying the mat with a volatile solvent containing a small percentage of water.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 78 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified; applying dry, granular starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer to said mat; and fixing said copolymer to said mat by spraying the mat with a volatile solvent containing a small percentage of water.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 6 wherein said mat is a glass fiber mat.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 93 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a mat of glass fibers adapted to accomplish a desired degree of separation of particulate material from the liquid to be purified; applying dry, granular starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer to the mat so as to at least partially penetrate the mat; and spraying the mat with a lower alcohol containing a small percentage of water to bond the copolymer to the glass fibers.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 93 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a mat of glass fibers adapted to accomplish a desired degree of separation of particulate material from the liquid to be purified; applying dry, granular starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer to the mat so as to at least partially penetrate the mat; and spraying the mat with a lower alcohol containing a small percentage of water to bond the copolymer to the glass fibers.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 77 words
A method of making a filter media to be employed in a filter used to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified comprising the steps of: providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified; applying dry, granular starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer to said mat; and fixing said copolymer to said mat by directing a fluid containing a small percentage of water at the mat.
