Abstract

Abstract A one-piece electronic module assembly is formed from a substantially rectangular baseplate on which an insulating film is mounted to carry circuit components. An enclosed assembly is completed by initially providing a pair of major bend axes across the baseplate, and forming inwardly extending notches at selected locations along lengthwise edges of the baseplate. The baseplate is bent at the notches to form a front wall, a pair of sidewalls and tabs that overlap the sidewalls. The baseplate is then bent over on itself along the major bend axes and sealed, if necessary, to form a completed assembly.

Claim 2
Independent Claim 195 words
A method of forming a unitary, enclosed electronic module assembly, comprising: a) providing a substantially rectangular baseplate having two substantially parallel width-wise edges, two substantially parallel length-wise edges, and a pair of width-wise extending major bend axes; b) forming, along the lengthwise edges of the baseplate, inwardly extending notches at predetermined locations selected to define at least a front wall piece and a pair of sidewall pieces, the lengthwise edges being otherwise substantially continuous and parallel to each other except for the notches; c) bending the front wall piece at an angle of about 90° along a width-wise extending axis to form a front wall that has first and second ends; d) bending the first and second ends of the front wall approximately 90° to form first and second tabs that are substantially perpendicular to the front wall; e) bending both sidewall pieces at an angle of approximately 90° along respective, length-wise extending axes to form a pair of sidewalls that overlap the tabs; and f) bending the baseplate over on itself by approximately 90° along each of its major bend axes so as to form an enclosure for circuits components to be carried therein.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the baseplate has a thickness, and wherein the thickness of the baseplate is reduced along both major bend axes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein the thickness is reduced by coining.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the baseplate has an inner surface, and further including providing an insulating film on the inner surface to carry circuit components.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 53 words
A method as set forth in claim 4 wherein the insulating film extends across the major bend axes, and including bonding most of the insulating film to the baseplate's inner surface while leaving a non-bonded portion of the insulating film at least in the area of the baseplate between the major bend axes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 71 words
A method as set forth in claim 4, further including providing holes in the insulating film near where the film overlies the bend axes, and wherein the bending of the baseplate over on itself along its major bend axes is effected by situating a mandrel near the major bend axes such that the mandrel contacts the baseplate through the holes in the insulating film, and bending the baseplate against the mandrel.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 408 words
A method of forming a unitary, enclosed electronic module assembly, comprising: a) providing a substantially flat baseplate bounded by first and second, substantially parallel lengthwise peripheral edges, and first and second, substantially parallel widthwise peripheral edges, the baseplate having a central inner surface for supporting electronic components, and having at least first and second major bend axes extending widthwise across the baseplate, the major bend axes bring located centrally of the baseplate and being relatively closely spaced to each other, the major bend axes dividing the baseplate into first, second and third parts, the first part of the baseplate being on one side of both major axes, the second part being on the opposite side of both major axes, and the third part being between the major axes; b) providing, in the first part of the baseplate and relatively close to the first widthwise peripheral edge, first and second, oppositely facing notches extending inwardly from the first and second lengthwise peripheral edges, respectively, with a first widthwise extending bend axis between the first and second notches; c) bending the baseplate approximately 90° along said first widthwise extending bend axis to form a front wall having first and second ends; d) bending the first and second ends of the front wall approximately 90° along first and second lengthwise extending bend axes to form first and second tabs that are substantially perpendicular to the front wall; e) providing, relatively close to the second major bend axis, third and fourth notches extending inwardly from the first and second lengthwise peripheral edges, respectively, and with a third lengthwise bend axis extending between the first and third notches and a fourth lengthwise bend axis extending between the second and fourth notches; f) bending, along the third lengthwise bend axis, that portion of the baseplate which is between the first and third notches so as to form a first sidewall that is substantially perpendicular to the front wall and that overlaps the first tab; g) bending, along the fourth lengthwise bend axis, that portion of the baseplate which is between the second and fourth notches so as to form a second sidewall that is substantially perpendicular to the front wall and that overlaps the second tab; and h) bending the baseplate over on itself by approximately 90 degrees along each of the major bend axis such that the front wall and the first and second side walls abut the second part of the baseplate.
